Here at SAGE, we talk a lot about giving back, and we love that we are fortunate enough to be able to give back to our community and organizations like the North Texas Food Bank and Breakthrough TD1.
Breakthrough TD1 is an organization that tackles type 1 diabetes, an autoimmune disease that causes the body’s immune system to attack the pancreas’ insulin-producing cells. Anyone, at any age, can be diagnosed with it; however, most are diagnosed in childhood. Speaking of diagnosis, about 2 million people have type 1 diabetes, including about 304,000 children, and approximately 1.2 million Americans are diagnosed with diabetes every year.
For our service day this year, we were able to partner with Breakthrough TD1. Founded in 1970, they are a tax-exempt nonprofit 501(c)3, and the leading type 1 diabetes research and advocacy organization in the world. They focus on making life with type 1 diabetes a little bit easier for those who have it by influencing policy, improving access to care, and advancing treatments.
Our team volunteered at the annual Breakthrough T1D walk. Arriving bright and early at 7 a.m., we were able to help set up the tents, man the check-in booth, have some fun at the kid zone, pass out drinks and snacks, and cheer on the participants as they began their walk!
With over 1,600 participants, making up 187 teams, and walking a collective 2,187.68 miles, the Dallas area Breakthrough T1D Walk raised $346,321 to support the search for a cure, work toward prevention, and provide better access and treatment to those with type 1 diabetes.
