Get to know Ryan Hanchey, Manager of Distributor Sales at SAGE.

What do you do in your position at SAGE?

I am responsible for supporting the distributor sales team and ensuring they have all that they need to provide the best service and experience for our current and future customers.

What was your first job? Did it teach you anything that you still use today?

I was the head cook at Grandy’s Chicken in Burleson, TX when I was 16.  It taught me to run fast. I had 1 pair of casual athletic shoes, and I worked in them.  I had so much grease soaked into my shoes that I was a shining beacon for any loose dog.

But honestly, yes, it did teach me skills that I use today.  Flour, batter, flour, toss.

What attracted you to the promotional products industry?

My cousin works at SAGE and he had such great stories of the company, their customers, and the industry as a whole. One day I had to drop a book off to him and went into the SAGE office.  I wasn’t planning to leave my current company, but I met everyone in the office, saw fun promotional products all over the place, and decided it was something I wanted to look into.

What professional accomplishment are you most proud of?

I am most proud of receiving the Pinnacle Sales Award in 2013 for Highest Total Sales when I was an Account Executive on the sales team.

What do you do in your free time?

My beautiful wife and I spend a lot of time with our family and friends outside of work.  We are blessed with the best of friends, close families, and awesome neighbors.  We love to travel to new places together, so any chance we get, we take advantage. I love being outside and look for any chance to go backpacking in the woods, hunting, and fishing.

What do you think is the key to succeeding in the industry?

Having a consultative mindset. Anyone can just take an order. In fact, that’s what websites are really great at. They work 24/7 and don’t require any sleep!

The most successful distributors that I meet and speak with are excited about what they sell, and they don’t focus on the products, at least not initially. They focus on what their customer is trying to accomplish. Not just for a specific event, but more importantly, they focus on what their customer is trying to accomplish from a more macro perspective. They ask more identifying questions about the end goal and not just what color they want an item to be. They help their customers with a marketing plan and essentially become an extension of their marketing department. Once you know what the customer has planned and is trying to accomplish, you can get creative and present out-of-the-box solutions that provide true value.

What keeps you motivated in your career?

Having a measurable part in helping our company and individual teammates grow and succeed.  Working for a company like SAGE where your feedback and ideas are valued is huge. Since technology and software are constantly improving, we get to try new things, explore new ideas, and create solutions.

The proverbial dangling carrot of knowledge, innovation and growth is what keeps me going.

If you could have invented one promotional product, what would it be?

The Laser Pointer. 9 out of 10 family cats would agree.

If there were a book written about your life, what would it be titled?

“My Dad Calls Me Booger”
